Dangerous Delta Nearing Yucatan Peninsula
Delta is a very powerful category 4 hurricane, and is only 200 miles from the Yucatan Peninsula.
Extreme winds are expected there, in addition to several inches of rain and 10 foot storm surges, tonight.
Winds have increased to 145 mph, and continued strengthening is possible in the next 12 hours before landfall.
Weakening should occur over the Peninsula but Delta should then restrengthen over the southern Gulf.
Delta could easily be just as strong then as it is now.
Cooler waters and a less favorable atmosphere should cause some weakening before the center makes landfall along the Gulf coast.
However, the NHC noted, that "regardless of Delta's
final landfall intensity, the projected large size of the hurricane
is likely to result in a significant storm surge and wind event for
portions of the northern Gulf coast later this week."
Here in Baltimore, there remains significant uncertainty in the forecast in terms of what affects we feel from Delta. It would likely be on Sunday that those affects are felt. But, we could get rain as early as Shabbos or as late as Monday. We could get just a couple of light showers, or some heavy rain.
