Dew Point

What is dew point?

If the air temperature cools down to the dew point, then the air can no longer hold the moisture as a gas and it must come down as a liquid - either producing dew or precipitation. The higher the dew point, the more muggy and sticky it feels outside. A lower dew point will feel more comfortable, since there is less moisture in the air and therefore your body can cool more easily.

Some additional FAQ on dew point

What dew points are considered comfortable?

Generally, a dew point between 35 and 55 is dry and comfortable. If the dew point is between 55 and 65, it begins to feel muggy. Above 65, it will be nearly oppressive.

Do higher dew points lead to more rain?

A higher dew point, which generally occurs in the summer months, makes it easier for rain to occur. This is because there is less of a distance between the air temperature and the dew point, which means only a small insitigator can cause rain. Strong thunderstorms typically happen on days with dew points near 70 degrees (especially higher up in the atmosphere).
