Ice Storm Underway With Unpredictable Changes

    This is why people think meteorologists are very inaccurate. Sleet has taken over, which means more ice than snow. But still very slippery today.

The atmospheric observation last night showed warm air aloft, 5,000 feet up. We assumed the initial snow and storm moving in would cool it off. 

But it hasn't. 

So other than a dusting of snow from onset, it is now sleet. 

Right now, that spot of warm air is melting snowflakes, which refreeze lower down into sleet. 

It will be incredibly difficult to predict what precipitation types fall at exactly what times. 

This model shows sleet at 8am, then snow at 10am.

But it isn't exact, so don't take the times literally. 

In summary, this will be more ice than snow in all likelihood. 

Though there could still be a few inches of snow and sleet accumulations. 

Anything that falls will stick, with temperatures at around 26 or 27 degrees. 

Be extremely cautious when driving today. 

A bit of a lull is likely this afternoon, before we get more sleet and freezing rain. 

I'm sorry for the bust that is likely, but at least this one didn't miss us like last time.
