In other areas of Maryland, drought conditions have developed from extreme heat and lack of rain. While there have been several heavy rain events in the past weeks, they have been over specific areas. As a result, any area that did not experience many storms is now in a short term drought.
U.S. Drought Monitor Maryland Dashboard. Data from July 21, their latest advisory time. |
The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) reports that 3% of Marylanders are in D1, or Moderate Drought. This can cause damage to some crops, and a small shortage of water appears. This D1 covers about 6% of the state's land, and about 150,000 residents, 3% of the population.
Another 37% of the population, about 1.9 million people, are in Abnormally Dry conditions. This covers most of central and western Maryland.
Across the United States, the USDM is reporting that 48.5 million people are experiencing a drought, roughly 26% of the population. They report that "Extreme (D3) and Exceptional (D4) drought is present in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Oregon, and California."
