Two Cyclones To Make Landfall Shabbos
Two Tropical Storms To Make Landfall on Shabbos
Tropical Storm Gonzalo
Gonzalo is a very compact storm, with winds extending only 25 miles from the center. It is located, as of 5pm, 390 miles east of the southern Windward Islands (look it up on the map). Maximum sustained winds are estimated at 40 mph. Gonzalo was initially forecast to strengthen into a hurricane, but it is now weakening. This is largely due to a dry environment, and small storms especially can’t handle changes in the atmosphere very much.
Still, heavy rains and gusty winds are expected along the southern Windward Islands tomorrow. Rain totals of 2-5 inches this weekend. It should make landfall Shabbos evening or early Motzei Shabbos.
Tropical storm Hanna
Hanna is located 190 miles east of Corpus Christi, Texas. Winds are at 50 mph, but Hanna is getting better organized, and is expected to reach near or at hurricane strength before landfall. Hanna should then weaken quickly over land. Landfall is expected on Shabbos afternoon or evening along the southern Texas coast.
Five to ten inches, with isolated totals of 15 inches along the southern Texas coast. 2-4 inches are expected along most of the Texas and Louisiana coastlines. Flash flooding is a significant risk.
